The Bayview Centre was buzzing on Monday, 16 March 2015 when Colwyn Bay became the first town in Wales to launch a town centre Retail Chaplaincy.
The Mayor and other representatives from the town, including local churches were present to welcome and support Lead Chaplain, Tecwyn Ifan and Lay Chaplains Janet Hughes and Pam Gilmour.
Within two months of the launch 120 businesses had been visited – some more than once or twice, and contacts made with managers and human resources personnel.
The Chaplaincy is a Cytun (Churches Together in Colwyn Bay & Rhos) initiative. It has been made possible through the generosity of people from St John’s Uniting Church (Methodist, URC, Baptist) in Colwyn Bay which closed in May 2013. The members of that church wanted to leave an ecumenical legacy to the town in the form of a chaplaincy. They agreed sufficient funds to start-up the project. A steering group consisting of people from different churches in the town was appointed by Cytun to manage the project.
